Here is an article and some interesting links in it.

I agree that China has issues and may not be the best comparison, but that we, as Americans, have lost opportunities. I can make a list of issues that I think we and our government has not dealt with since 2000, but I will spare all of you. I think the difference is that China's government understands that it can do many things to shape the future. After many failings of our government, I think the questions of government's role such as help with transition into the future jobs, to pay for medical needs that are beyond our individual abilities, to protect us from natural disasters which includes potential climate change, and smart national defense without taking all of our civil liberties.

The next issue is competition which seems to continue to be about the fear of the unknown than what world we want in the future. I feel that we need to move forward not because we know where we are going but that it is the direction that we need for future generations. Being from Ohio, I see the struggles of people to move from past manufacturing jobs with no help with training, healthcare, pensions, or new jobs, but as well there is a continual fear of the change in many places which keeps the cycle of contraction growing. In addition there is this conservative ideology that government's role is to say that "you are on your own". I do not think the Chinese knew everything before they started the Olympics building, but they charged forward to change their city. I do not think the Japanese knew where they were going with Hybrid engines, but they made them and created a new industry in the past 8 years. The Korean and the Brits with many others are pushing forward on cell research not because they know where they will end up, but because they know the science needs to move forward. I am praying that the nation moves forward into the 21st century because we have spent 8 years moving at best sideways in many areas. I hope that the country sees that we need change that will move us toward the American ideals of justice, fairness, individualism, and the freedom to become a better people and this can make us the most competitive nation in the world.

Re: Want to schedule a get-together, just Pres-Do

Michael,
